S&P 500 (SPX500)
Standard & Poor's 500 is a well-known speculative index that includes 500 large companies that have common stock on the NYSE, NASDAQ, or the Cboe BZX Exchange. The index measures the stock market performance of these large companies in the United States. The index is widely used as a benchmark for the U.S. stock market and is considered an indicator of the overall health of the U.S. economy. -
Safe haven
Is a globally traded currency that is expected to retain or increase its value during high volatility periods. It is characterized by long-term stability of its purchasing power and often services as reliable and stable store of value. The following currencies are often recognized as safe haven: USD, EUR, CHF, GBP. -
SAR
The currency code for the Saudi riyal, the currency of Saudi Arabia. -
Scalping
Scalping is a trading strategy based on making large number of short term trades in attempt to make a small profit for each of them. It usually requires high leverage so that small price change would be equal to a respectable profit. Scalping can be automated or manual. -
Sector
An industry or a market that shares common characteristics, like a mining or a banking sector. -
Security of funds
Referrs to the measures taken by the company to ensure safety of the clients funds, including segregated accounts, SSL-protected personal area, account verification. -
Segregated accounts
Is a type of bank accounts brokers use to keep clients funds separate from the company's sheets. The measure is indented to keep clients' funds safe and secure. -
Sell limit
A sell order to execute at a specified price level. -
Sell stop
A sell order below the current market price. -
Sentiment
Is the prevailing attitude toward a particular security or larger financial market based on a variety of fundamental and technical factors, including price history, economic reports, seasonal factors, and national and world events. -
Settlement
Physical delivery of currencies at the maturity of a contract. -
SGD
The currency code for the Singapore dollar. -
Shareholders' equity
The portion of a company's assets that belong to its owners including the initial investment made by shareholders and any additional investments made by them over time. It also consists of the company's retained earnings, which are the profits earned by the business that are not distributed to shareholders in the form of dividends.
It is an essential metric for investors as it reflects the financial health of a company and its ability to generate returns for its shareholders. For creditors, this metric indicates how much a company relies on debt financing. -
Short position
A position opened by a Sell order and closed by a Buy order. -
Short sale
Selling an instrument with the intent of purchasing it back at a lower price. -
Signal

Silver
Is the user status that becomes available when the user's overall balance exceeds 999.99 USD. Silver status allows its holders to enjoy all the benefits of Bronze, as well as to get trading signals from Autochartist, claim premium gifts in Trade and Win, and accumulate more prize lots (1.1 prize lots for one lot traded). This status holders can be downgraded to Bronze if their balance goes below 800 USD. -
Slippage
Is a slight open or close price movement that occurs due to lack of liquidity at the requested price or market gaps. Depending on the market conditions, the order may be filled at a more favourable rate (positive slippage) or less favorable rate (negative slippage). If a broker has a deep liquidity pool, only few orders will experience slippage. It is more common during high volatility periods, major news releases or when the market is illiquid. -
Smart Stop out
Is the stop out algorithm applied on cTrader accounts where once the margin level falls below the stop out level all open positions are partially closed, as opposed to the algorithm where the positions are closed in their entirety. -
Solana
The platform is an open-source project that relies on the permissionless essence of blockchain technology to supply decentralised financing solutions. Its digital currency uses the abbreviation SOL. -
South African reserve bank (SARB)
The central bank of South Africa. -
Spike
Is a comparatively large upward or downward price movement over a short period of time. This non-market spike may occur due to a transaction that entered the system by mistake or a technical issue. If a client experienced a loss due to an off-market spike, Octa either compensates the funds lost or deletes the order. -
Spot market
A financial market in which financial instruments, such as commodities, currencies, and securities, are traded for immediate delivery. Delivery is the exchange of cash for a financial instrument. On the other hand, a futures contract is based on the delivery of the underlying asset at a future date. Exchanges and over-the-counter (OTC) markets may provide spot trading and (or) futures trading. In a spot market, settlement typically occurs in two business days (T+2 timeframe). Spot markets like cryptocurrency exchanges can be organised as physical or entirely virtual. -
Spot price
The immediate market price at which a particular asset, such as a security or currency, can be bought or sold. Traders pay the spot price for the instant delivery of the asset. The spot price is determined by the orders posted by buyers and sellers in the market. In highly liquid markets, the spot price may change by the second as orders are filled, and new ones enter the marketplace. -
Spread
Is the difference between the lowest ask price and the highest bid price, which is measured in Pips. The bid price is always lower than the ask price. Example: When EUR/USD bid is 1.13583 and ask is 1.13588, spread is equal to 0.5 pips. Currency pairs have different spreads depending mostly on their liquidity. The more liquid a currency pair is, the tighter its spread.

Is a security technology that establishes an encrypted link between a web server and a browser in order to keep all data passed between the web server and browsers private and integral. -
Status
Is the user's level in Octa's status program that determines the set of benefits the user can enjoy. The higher the users' overall balance, the higher is their user status. Higher status holders have access to more benefits. -
Stochastic oscillator
A technical analysis tool measuring the momentum of the price of an asset. It compares the closing price of an asset to its price range over a particular period. The oscillator ranges between 0 and 100, where a reading above 80 indicates an overbought asset and a reading below 20 indicates an oversold asset. -
Stock broker
An agent licensed to buy and sell securities on behalf of clients, being an intermediary between buyers and sellers in financial markets. Stock brokers are typically employed by brokerage firms and compensated through commission fees. -
Stock exchange
A marketplace where stocks or shares of publicly traded companies are bought and sold by investors. The stock exchange provides a platform for trading securities, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and derivatives. Trading on a stock exchange is governed by rules and regulations designed to ensure fair and transparent trading practices. Investors can buy and sell securities through a broker or directly on the exchange. -
Stock index
A statistical measurement of the value of a group of stocks. It represents the overall performance of this group and is used to track the performance of a specific market or industry. The measurement of the stock index is calculated based on the market capitalisation of the underlying stocks. Stock indices are used as a benchmark to compare the performance of individual stocks or portfolios against the overall stock market. -
Stop limit order
Is a pending order which combines features of stop order and limit order: it becomes a buy limit or sell limit once the price reaches your stop level. -
Stop loss order
An order intended to limit the loss on a position triggered when a specific price is reached. When the price reaches a level predetermined by the trader, the open order automatically closes. A stop-loss order allows traders to decide how much they can afford to lose. -
Stop order
Is a pending orders that determines the price the position should be opened at. Buy stop order is entered above the current ask price and sell stop order is entered below the current bid price. -
Stop-Out
Is a point at which open positions are closed automatically due to reduction in account margin to the level that can no longer sustain the positions. -
Supercharged
Is the real contest that gives Octa client an opportunity to win one of the prizes by skillfully trading with his or her real account. -
Support (Level)
Is a price level which a trading instrument does not or rarely falls below. -
Swap
Is a payment for holding a position overnight. Swap can be negative or positive. -
Swap-free account
Is a type of account designed for traders of Islamic faith that has fixed fee instead of swap. The fee is not an interest and depends on the direction of the order. -
Swiss national bank
The central bank of Switzerland. Also SNB. -
Swissie
